We've shown you plenty of time-lapse videos on [GAS] featuring stars as they move from one horizon to the other, but we're pretty sure you've never seen what we're about to show you, which highlights the "spinning" nature of our planet.

Youtube user Annodomino2007 spent 5 weeks building what he says was the biggest domino pyramid ever (with over 13,482 dominoes!), only to have his dream shattered at the last possible instant. Unfortunately, the remainder of the footage where the dude wrecks his whole house in rage wasn't caught on tape.

Star Wars remake week: A New Hope (Lego Remake)

Today's Star Wars remake is an attempt to film the entire movie using Lego. Unfortunately it appears the artist only made it as far as the Cantina scene, after which only part of each scene have been completed and, as the site's last update was in 2008, it doesn't look hopeful that the project will come to fruition.

Still, the project does deserve added geek credit for placing the contact page link under an animated GIF of R2-D2 displaying Leia's message for Obi-Wan.

"-English, motherfucker! Do you speak it?"

Made of WIN and AWESOME: Remote-Controlled Superhero [Video]

Just imagine, one evening, as you're walking around your neighborhood, you see this thing zipping past you in the sky:

Now for only $295, you too can make your neighborhood's kids think that superheroes actually exist!

Specifications: The full scale RcSuperhero is 75 inches tall, weighs approximately 3 pounds, and has an "arm span" or wingspan of 45 inches.

Flight characteristics: Great! This is due to the low weight to surface area and that it has a high wing like a Piper cub with a low center of gravity. In addition, he has plenty of vertical tail surfaces due to the double side bodies; which adds to the stability. Also, the RcSuperhero has oversized control surfaces and likes to fly upright. He takes off by being thrown or by standing upright in a stand and lands on his belly skids.

Thrust: The RcSuperhero has about 6 pounds of thrust; this allows for vertical take off.

Snake Oil version 2

SnakeOil - the evidence for nutritional supplements
We've updated SnakeOil, our interactive "balloon race" visualization of the scientific evidence for over 100 nutritional supplements.

This Flash app coded by the awesome Andy Perkins is generated from the data in this spreadsheet: http://bit.ly/SnakeOil2 – lovingly curated by researcher Miriam Quick.

What Have We Done?

We've revised the data from top to bottom. That included processing over 300 emails from visitors who offered evidence, fresh studies and often angry criticism of our ratings. People invested in Fish Oil & Omega 3? Chill out! (Maybe try smoking some of that fish oil?)

We've also factored in a bunch of new studies from the last year. Revised our categories. And added a series of new supplements including: chromium, rhodiola rosea L., grape seed extract, coconut oil and melatonin.

We also worked with the Cochrane Institute to help improve our library searches and study sources.

See exactly what's changed in our change log.
(Note: the still image version is still using old data as I haven't had time to update it yet.)

SnakeOil Analytics

We've had analytics running on the app over the last 6 months. That's allowed us to track the exact way people use the viz and which supps they explore.

• visitors: 750,000
• visitors who interacted: 220,000 (30%)
• most popular filter (by a long way): sex (followed by cancer, anti-viral and mental health)
• most popular supplements (above the worth-it-line): green tea, fish oil, vitamin D, St John's wort, probiotics
• most popular supplements (below the worth-it-line): devil's claw, L-lysine, L-carnitine, lutein, CoQ10, goji (hmmm, lot of body-building supps there)

Help Us Improve This

As ever, if you see a good, solid randomized-controlled trial or meta-study, or an error in our data – or just want to rag us for rating Fish Oil so low, do get in touch or comment below!

Nevada bill would take hands-free to a new level

Enviado por luishernando a través de Google Reader:

vía Geeks are Sexy Technology News de JLister el 12/05/11

Google has hired a lobbyist to promote proposed laws that would allow cars without drivers to operate in Nevada.

The company has already developed vehicles using the technology and tested them extensively in California. The new laws would make Nevada the first state where such vehicles are formally allowed on public roads. (The company believes its California tests were legal as they allowed the human driver to override any errors.)

The Google system involves a combination of the cars using Google's own maps and traffic data to figure out routes and drive within the prevailing speed limit, and a suite of sensors, cameras and radar devices to keep track of the position and movements of surrounding objects.

This isn't the only such project in the works. A European research project tested in Sweden involves electronically controlled vehicles syncing with one another to form an automated convoy on major roads, with the front vehicle controlling movement and speed.

Google hasn't said publicly why it has targeted Nevada for the first state to allow the cars. My guess is it's a combination of the state being known for relatively relaxed attitudes to many issues, and there's plenty of desert road where it may be easier to try scaling the number of driverless vehicles rather than in busy metropolitan areas.

As well as the bill to allow the vehicles, lobbyist David Goldwater is also working on a bill that would exempt the cars from rules banning texting by drivers. Both bills are expected to go to a vote next month.

§ Naturpixel.
